Health Unit Coordinator – Neuroscience Unit

About the role

The Neuroscience Unit at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center is seeking a full‑time Health Unit Coordinator to provide essential clerical and secretarial support to nursing staff. This day‑shift position ensures smooth patient flow, accurate documentation, and timely communication within a high‑volume, specialized unit.

Key responsibilities

• Perform admission, discharge, transfer, and death paperwork.
• Alert licensed nursing personnel to STAT orders and transcribe physician orders promptly.
• Manage unit inventory, requisition supplies, and maintain equipment logs.
• Answer phones and intercoms, relay messages, and document communications.
• Schedule patient tests, diagnostic procedures, and physician appointments.
• Organize patient charts, label forms, and obtain external records.
• Maintain patient flow using the unit’s flowboard and ensure proper discharge disposition in the EMR.
• Assist physicians in obtaining lab and radiology reports.
• Participate in quality‑improvement initiatives and complete annual education assignments.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED (or equivalent experience).
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow policies and safety standards.
• Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities in a fast‑paced clinical environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency in basic computer applications and electronic medical record systems.
• Effective written and verbal communication for accurate order transcription and message relay.
