Food Safety Understudy

About the role

The Food Safety Understudy will support Vela Personnel’s agricultural client in monitoring food safety regulations, especially those related to plant protection products and Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs). The role combines research, administrative assistance and stakeholder communication to ensure compliance with national and international standards.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and report updates on food safety regulations, including changes to MRLs in key export markets.
• Track EU regulatory developments such as EFSA publications and EU Food and Feed Omnibus policies.
• Research and update the CGA/CRI Recommended Usage Restrictions for plant protection products.
• Support Citrus Sustainability Forum activities, including agenda preparation, minute‑taking and stakeholder feedback.
• Maintain Crop Protection Needs records with Citrus Research International and highlight research gaps.
• Provide administrative and research support for engagements with agricultural chemistry companies, policymakers and government officials.
• Assist in responding to food‑safety queries from growers, retailers and exporters.
• Participate in investigations of MRL exceedances and help prepare related reports.
• Engage in industry forums, working groups and audit reference groups to influence on‑farm audit standards.
• Contribute to content that promotes the health benefits of citrus for consumers.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Agriculture, Agricultural Science, Food Science, Environmental Science or a related field; MSc advantageous but not required.
• Exposure to regulatory, compliance or sustainability work is beneficial.
• Strong attention to detail, analytical mindset and ability to work independently.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for stakeholder interaction.
