Financial Services Advisory Intern 2027

About the role

BDO's Financial Services Advisory division is offering a 12-month internship in Johannesburg. The intern will be exposed to advisory work covering financial reporting, technology risk, governance, regulatory compliance and client consulting, developing business and advisory skills in a dynamic environment.

Key responsibilities

• Perform general information technology controls (GITC) and application controls testing
• Analyse information systems data to check the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of transaction processing
• Help identify and assess emerging technology and financial reporting risks for financial services clients
• Provide technical support to engagement auditors on computer-assisted audit techniques (CAATs)
• Support client-facing reports, management presentations and advisory deliverables
• Assist with regulatory compliance reviews against FAIS, FICA, FSCA, NCA and POPIA where relevant
• Contribute to consulting projects on risk advisory, business process improvement and governance reviews
• Support due diligence and data analysis with tools such as IDEA and MS Excel
• Research IT risk management, IT governance and frameworks such as COBIT, ITIL and ISO 27001-2

Required profile

• Degree in Business Management, Engineering, Accounting, Information Systems, Informatics, Finance, Law or equivalent; BCom Accounting or BCom Internal Auditing preferred
• BCom Law or LLB with a commercial focus considered
• No prior work experience required; entry-level internship
• Vacation work, clerkships or part-time exposure in consulting, audit, legal, financial services or regulatory fields recognised
• Academic projects, case competitions or research on financial analysis, compliance, governance or technology risk are advantageous
• Interest in emerging technologies such as AI, IoT and machine learning

• Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Willingness to learn data analysis and IT risk/governance frameworks
• Attention to detail, professionalism, strong client orientation and ability to work with all levels of an organisation
