Job description

About the role

Lyceum College invites suitably qualified and experienced academic professionals to serve as External Moderators across its faculties, including the Faculty of Education. Moderators safeguard academic standards, ensure fairness and support continuous improvement in assessment by providing an independent, expert evaluation of assessment instruments and marking processes. Moderators may not at the same time serve as Module Leaders for the same programme or faculty.

Key responsibilities

  • Pre-assessment moderation: review draft exams and assignments for quality, relevance, difficulty and alignment to module outcomes; evaluate marking rubrics and memos for accuracy and consistency; confirm NQF level expectations.
  • Post-assessment moderation: moderate samples of marked student work across performance bands, verify marking accuracy, flag academic integrity risks and recommend amendments or remarking.
  • Mentorship: give developmental feedback to internal examiners, Module Leaders and academic staff, and contribute evidence-based recommendations to improve assessment design and standards.
  • Reporting: submit moderation reports within set timelines, highlight risks and support the College's external quality assurance requirements.

Required profile

  • Master's degree in Education or the teaching specialisation (essential).
  • At least three years' experience in teaching, teaching education, assessment design, curriculum development or instructional design in higher education.
  • Demonstrable experience developing study guides, assessments or academic content.
  • Experience teaching or supervising in distance/online education (an advantage).
  • Understanding of South African schooling contexts and curriculum, and familiarity with regulatory standards and quality assurance frameworks.

Required skills

  • Computer literacy with a laptop/desktop and reliable internet.
  • Ability to give independent, impartial and development-oriented feedback and to meet deadlines.

Applicants apply by email with a cover letter naming the thematic clusters and modules, a full CV, certified qualification copies, academic transcripts and a brief portfolio of previous moderation or assessment experience.
