Experienced Jumbo Operator – Underground Hard Rock Mining

About the role

We are seeking experienced Jumbo Operators to join our underground hard‑rock mining teams across Africa. The role involves operating single, twin or multi‑boom jumbo drilling rigs for decline, incline and level development, installing ground support, and mentoring local crew members. You will work with limited supervision in a safety‑critical environment.

Key responsibilities

• Operate jumbo drilling rigs (single, twin or multi‑boom) for mass excavation and development.
• Mark up faces and set up drill‑blast patterns in line with geological, survey and statutory specifications.
• Install ground support systems, including cable‑bolt holes, according to geotechnical plans.
• Assess ground conditions, apply ground‑control measures and ensure compliance with safety legislation.
• Communicate with surveyors, geologists and engineers to optimise drill patterns and advance metres.
• Maintain accurate activity logs, production records and consumable usage reports.
• Conduct pre‑shift equipment inspections, report faults and manage maintenance.
• Provide informal mentoring and training to less‑experienced operators.

Required profile

• College or technical training equivalent to two years of study, or a recognised trade.
• Extensive underground hard‑rock mining experience, particularly on jumbo rigs.
• Proven ability to read and interpret ground‑support and mine instruction plans.
• Good written and spoken English.
• Valid passport and ability to obtain work permits for the host country.

Required skills

• Operation of jumbo drilling rigs (single, twin, multi‑boom) – Sandvik, Epiroc, Atlas Copco, Boart Longyear.
• Ground‑support installation, including cable‑bolt drilling.
• Basic electrical and mechanical understanding of jumbo equipment.
• Familiarity with automation systems such as Sandvik iSURE or Epiroc RCS (advantage).
• Ability to read survey data and geological specifications.
