Executive – Legal, Risk & Governance

About the role

The Executive – Legal, Risk & Governance will support Bestmed Medical Scheme’s top management in meeting regulatory obligations and strengthening corporate governance. This senior position oversees the corporate compliance programme, manages litigation matters and drives risk‑management initiatives across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the legal, risk and governance strategy in alignment with the Board of Trustees and executive management.
• Maintain and update the Corporate Risk Register, monitor compliance risks and report to the Board and relevant committees.
• Provide legal advice, draft and negotiate contracts, service level agreements and other legal documents.
• Manage litigation processes, represent the scheme at CMS appeal hearings and coordinate with external counsel.
• Oversee the Corporate Compliance Programme and ensure policies and procedures meet legislative requirements.
• Administer the scheme’s intellectual property portfolio, including registrations and renewals.
• Ensure adherence to King IV principles and other governance standards.

Required profile

• Qualified legal professional with extensive experience in corporate governance, compliance and litigation.
• Proven ability to work with senior executives and board members.
• Strong understanding of South African health‑sector regulations and the Medical Schemes Act.
• Excellent analytical and communication skills.
