English Language Arts (ELA) Instructional Specialist

About the role

The English Language Arts (ELA) Instructional Specialist supports the district’s ELA curriculum and assessment implementation. Working under general direction, the specialist partners with schools, administrators, and teachers to enhance reading, writing, and language instruction for all students, including targeted groups such as off‑level and English Learners.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate district‑wide ELA curriculum development and assessment implementation.
• Promote research‑based instructional strategies that improve reading, writing, and language development.
• Develop and compile resources for reading and writing interventions, including technology integration.
• Monitor and analyze instructional assessment data; assist schools in using disaggregated data for instructional planning.
• Provide large‑group, small‑group, and individual professional development to support data‑driven decision making.
• Coach administrators and teachers on evidence‑based core instructional strategies, classroom management, and lesson design.
• Model lessons, conduct observations, and employ coaching techniques such as whisper coaching and video analysis.
• Support teacher induction through facilitation, coaching, training, and program evaluation.
• Design and deliver job‑embedded professional development aligned with district curricula and assessment goals.

Required profile

• Experience supporting teachers in ELA instruction and curriculum implementation.
• Ability to analyze and interpret student achievement data to inform instruction.
• Strong coaching and mentoring skills for administrators and teachers.
• Familiarity with research‑based literacy practices and intervention strategies.
• Commitment to improving outcomes for targeted student populations, including EL and off‑level learners.
