Electoral Process Internship – South Africa

About the role

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa is offering internship opportunities for highly motivated individuals to gain practical experience in electoral processes and democratic governance. Interns will support the planning, execution and evaluation of elections while developing a deep understanding of South Africa's democratic system.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in planning, coordination and execution of electoral activities such as voter registration, education, candidate nomination and election‑day logistics.
• Support voter outreach and civic education programmes to increase awareness and participation.
• Help develop and maintain voter databases, ensuring data integrity.
• Provide administrative support for meetings, workshops and public consultations.
• Conduct research and analysis on electoral systems, policies and legislation.
• Monitor and evaluate election‑related activities for compliance with legal and ethical standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in political science, public administration, law or a related field.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and proficiency in at least one other official South African language.
• Knowledge of South Africa's electoral system and democratic processes.
• Excellent research and analytical abilities with a professional attitude.
• Willingness to travel and work in various locations across South Africa.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Basic computer literacy and ability to use standard office software.
