Director of Student Life

About the role

The University of the Free State seeks a senior leader to head Student Life and Governance across its three campuses. Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Affairs, Sport, Arts and Culture, the Director will shape strategic, operational and governance frameworks that enhance student development, engagement and success.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction for Student Life and Student Governance, aligning initiatives with Vision 130 and the broader Student Affairs portfolio.
• Oversee student governance structures, including SRC governance, student leadership bodies, constitutions and electoral processes.
• Lead and integrate the Student Leadership Development, KovsieACT, Student Research & Development, and Student Governance units to ensure a cohesive student experience.
• Develop and implement policies, standards and frameworks that promote ethical leadership, accountability and transparent decision‑making.
• Partner with Legal Services and other internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with legislation, university statutes and governance protocols.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in higher education or a comparable student affairs environment.
• Deep understanding of student governance, policy development and strategic planning.
• Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build internal and external partnerships.
• Demonstrated ability to lead large, multidisciplinary teams and drive collaborative outcomes.
