Director – Legal Services (Level 13)

About the role

The Department of Military Veterans is seeking a senior legal professional to lead its Legal Services directorate. The role involves providing strategic legal advice, overseeing the drafting of legislation and contracts, and managing litigation matters across the department. The successful candidate will report directly to the Director of Human Resource Management and will be responsible for a wide range of legal functions.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the provision of legal advisory services and the preparation of legal opinions.
• Oversee drafting and compilation of legal documents, including tender documents, contracts, memoranda of understanding and legislation.
• Coordinate liaison with external legal counsel, state attorneys and other government departments on litigation and regulatory matters.
• Direct the administration of lawsuits, criminal and civil investigations, and the representation of the department in court.
• Supervise the directorate’s financial, human resources and asset management.

Required profile

• Senior Certificate and a Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) or equivalent qualification.
• Minimum five years of middle‑management experience in a legal environment, preferably as a Deputy Director.
• Certificate for entry into the Senior Management Service.
• Strong knowledge of legal processes, government policies and the ability to interpret legislation.
