Director – Financial Accounting (Level 13)

About the role

The Department of Military Veterans seeks a senior leader to oversee all financial accounting functions. The Director will ensure compliance with public finance legislation and drive strategic financial management across the department.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, review and implement financial accounting policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Prepare and oversee the production of periodic, interim and annual financial statements.
• Manage audit files, address internal audit and AGSA findings, and implement corrective actions.
• Oversee payroll, accounts payable, sundry debtors, cash receipts, and fund requisitioning.
• Ensure timely payment to suppliers and maintain robust internal controls.
• Lead risk identification, mitigation planning and implementation.
• Supervise departmental accounting processes, general ledger reconciliation and banking activities.
• Coordinate human capital management and resource development within the finance unit.

Required profile

• Undergraduate qualification (NQF Level 7) in Financial Management or related field.
• Minimum five years of middle‑management experience as a Deputy Director in financial management.
• Certificate for entry into the Senior Management Service.
• Strong knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act, supply‑chain policies and government‑wide financial directives.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation and policies.
