Deputy Director – Legal Services (Level 11)

About the role

The Department of Military Veterans is seeking a Deputy Director to lead its Legal Services unit. This senior position provides strategic legal advice, oversees the drafting of legal instruments and ensures compliance with relevant legislation. The role is based in Pretoria and includes a twelve‑month probation period.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advisory services and draft legal opinions for the department.
• Prepare, review and vet tender documents, contracts, memoranda of understanding and service level agreements.
• Draft legislation, accompanying memoranda and respond to parliamentary enquiries.
• Manage litigation matters, including liaison with State Attorneys, external counsel and other government entities.
• Ensure compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) and the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAJA).
• Oversee the administration of lawsuits and represent department employees in criminal matters arising from official duties.

Required profile

• National Senior Certificate and a Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) or equivalent qualification.
• 3‑5 years of relevant experience at Assistant Director level within a government or public‑sector environment.
• Demonstrated integrity, confidentiality, fairness and a commitment to public service.

Required skills

• Legal advisory and opinion drafting.

• Knowledge of POPI, PAJA and other relevant statutes.
• Litigation management and coordination with external counsel.
• Legal research and report writing.
