Data Engineer

About the role

Nawiri Group, a certified B Corp operating a portfolio of responsible travel companies across Africa's wilderness areas, is hiring a Data Engineer in Cape Town. You will build and operate secure, reliable and scalable data products and platform services that turn source-system data into trusted, AI-ready datasets for reporting and analytics. The role owns assigned integrations, pipelines, transformations and technical data models end to end, applying modern software-engineering and DataOps practices, and works with Analytics, Data Science, Technology and business teams.

Key responsibilities

• Turn business and analytics requirements into practical designs and own data products from build through to production support.
• Build and maintain batch, incremental and change-data-capture pipelines from databases, APIs, SaaS platforms, files and event sources.
• Develop tested, documented and modular data models that analysts and Power BI users can trust.
• Deliver scalable, resilient and cost-efficient changes to the data platform, providing governed, reproducible data for analytics and AI.
• Implement automated testing, monitoring, alerting and lineage; manage access, privacy and platform cost; investigate incidents and fix root causes.
• Use Git, peer review, CI/CD and infrastructure as code, create reusable patterns, documentation and runbooks, and share knowledge.

Required profile

• Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 4+ years in data engineering (or software engineering with a strong data focus), including ownership of production data pipelines.
• Experience monitoring and troubleshooting production workloads, from alerting to root-cause analysis.

Required skills

• Advanced SQL, including complex queries and performance tuning, and strong Python for data work.
• Solid SQL Server and T-SQL, including supporting, troubleshooting and reverse-engineering SSIS packages and SQL Server Agent jobs.
• Data modelling: dimensional modelling (star and snowflake schemas), medallion architecture and layered warehouse design.
• Cloud platform experience (ideally AWS) with hands-on use of S3, Glue (Python/PySpark) and Lambda.
• CI/CD and DataOps, version control and deployment frameworks such as GitHub.
• Advantageous: Snowflake, Airflow, dbt, Dagster, AWS Step Functions, Fivetran, Airbyte, AWS DMS, Terraform, AWS CDK, CloudFormation, and relevant certifications.
