Clinical Technician / Technologist – Hospital Technical Department

About the role

The Clinical Technician/Technologist will manage and maintain the hospital's medical equipment portfolio, ensuring optimal performance, compliance and cost‑effectiveness. This role involves asset management, preventive maintenance, vendor coordination and training of end‑users.

Key responsibilities

• Establish and maintain a computerized asset management system in line with Hospital Engineering protocols.
• Generate and manage a medical equipment replacement plan for all hospital devices.
• Perform first‑line repairs, modifications and installations using appropriate test equipment, adhering to OEM and regulatory standards.
• Conduct preventive maintenance inspections according to Hospital and OEM guidelines.
• Coordinate selection, acquisition and supply‑chain management of new medical equipment.
• Monitor equipment failure trends, life‑cycle costs and manage equipment service level agreements.
• Provide formal training for nursing staff and end‑users, ensuring competency compliance.

Required profile

• Diploma in Clinical/Biomedical Engineering, Electronics or Electrical Engineering (NQF level 6) or equivalent.
• Minimum three (3) years’ experience as a Clinical Technician in a hospital environment.
• Experience with planned maintenance, budgeting and financial control is advantageous.
• Membership of the Clinical Engineering Association of South Africa (CEASA) is a plus.
• Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel as required.

Required skills

• Computer literacy, especially with asset management software.
• Solid understanding of asset management systems.
• Proficiency in using test equipment for equipment repair and installation.
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulatory requirements.
• Ability to control structured budgets for equipment procurement.
