Cabling Design Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a Cabling Design Engineer to create detailed CAD drawings and design documentation for a US‑based IT site. The role is based in our Cape Town office and supports Sedna’s robotics and automation projects worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Design high‑voltage (HV) and low‑voltage (LV) power cabling routes for 277/480 V three‑phase distribution to IT equipment, PDUs and UPS systems.
• Size and schedule cables, produce circuit identification and load schedules.
• Design containment and conduit routes in compliance with NEC NFPA 70 (Articles 645, 230, 250, 310) and coordinate power‑data separation to avoid EMI.
• Select and specify optical fibre types (OS2 single‑mode, OM3/OM4/OM5 multimode) and design the complete fibre plant layout, including ODF positions, splice enclosures, bend radius and slack storage.
• Produce fibre schedules with core counts, link lengths, loss budgets and test criteria to TIA‑526‑14/‑7.
• Design copper data cabling runs to TIA‑568 categories, create patch‑panel and rack elevation drawings, and define demarcation points between copper and fibre.
• Generate all design output in AutoCAD, manage drawing layers, naming conventions and title blocks, and maintain as‑built records.

Required profile

• Eligibility to work in South Africa (South African citizen or permanent resident).

Required skills

• AutoCAD for drawing production.
• Knowledge of NEC NFPA 70 standards (Articles 645, 230, 250, 310).
• Familiarity with TIA‑526‑14, TIA‑526‑7 and TIA‑568 cable standards.
• Experience with HV & LV power cabling design.
• Fiber‑optic design expertise (OS2, OM3, OM4, OM5, LC, SC, MPO/MTP connectors).
• Copper data‑cabling design and patch‑panel layout.
