Butchery Assistant

About the role

Pick n Pay is hiring a butchery assistant in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape. The role covers operating butchery equipment, managing and merchandising stock, preparing and breaking down meat carcasses, and keeping the cold chain and hygiene standards up.

Key responsibilities

• Operate all butchery equipment, including the bandsaw, and report any faulty equipment or utensils to the Butchery Manager
• Manage, merchandise and promote stock in line with established procedures and standards
• Prepare and break down meat carcasses according to specified guidelines
• De-bone meat cuts and produce mince, sausages and boerewors
• Prevent waste, shrinkage and damage
• Check temperatures and oversee the maintenance of the cold chain
• Engage with customers professionally and courteously, and maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene
• Assist with receiving meat from suppliers and train staff on new products or lines

Required profile

• Grade 12 (matric)
• Lives close to the store
• Meets the medical criteria set by the OHS Act for the butchery
• Successfully completes the required numeracy screening assessments
• Physically able to lift carcasses and containers of meat and comfortable working in a cold environment

Required skills

• Ability to cut, manufacture and produce meat products such as loin chops and roasts (evaluated)
• Customer-oriented, effective communicator and team player
• Accuracy, attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
