Biodiversity Enforcement Officer

About the role

eThekwini is recruiting a Biodiversity Enforcement Officer in Durban. The officer enforces environmental legislation, investigates complaints about development and natural resources, and deals with unauthorised development that affects the environment.

Key responsibilities

• Implement the national and provincial Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations and ensure compliance with related environmental legislation.
• Investigate complaints and queries about development, natural resources and biodiversity matters.
• Terminate unauthorised development or land uses that cannot be regularised where environmental degradation is occurring.
• Regularise unauthorised development or land uses that are negatively impacting the environment.
• Prepare and report all statistical information.

Required profile

• Degree (NQF Level 7) in Environmental Science, Environmental Management or another related and equivalent qualification.
• Valid motor vehicle driving licence.
• 3 years of relevant experience; a postgraduate qualification (NQF Level 8) and 4 years of experience are preferred.
• Computer literacy.
• Able to undertake fieldwork.
• May be appointed as a Commissioner of Oaths, Peace Officer, Environmental Management Inspector, Forest Officer or similar position if deemed necessary by the Manager (Development Assessment).
