Assistant/Trainee Laboratory Manager (Civil Engineering)

About the role

SGS Matrolab, a division of SGS South Africa, is looking for an Assistant/Trainee Laboratory Manager for its Civil Engineering Site Laboratories in Pretoria. The role supports the Laboratory Manager with managerial and laboratory tasks, both on site and in the commercial laboratory, and covers civil engineering testing such as soils, asphalt, seals, concrete and aggregate.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Laboratory Manager with equipment cleaning and maintenance, and with completing materials testing in all laboratory divisions, including bench calculations when needed.
• Ensure the laboratory stays clean and follow work instructions from technicians, supervisors or authorised personnel.
• Help ensure accreditation and health and safety requirements are met, and verify that the correct test methods are followed, reporting any deviations immediately.
• Adhere to the quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
• Support the Laboratory Manager with payroll instructions, leave forms and other administrative duties.
• Provide training to reporting staff when needed, and cover the laboratory's functions in line with procedures while the Laboratory Manager is absent.

Required profile

• National Diploma (NQF 6) or Grade 12 (NQF 4) equivalent, or sufficient recognised skills and experience via Recognition of Prior Learning.
• Alternatively, Grade 12 and 10 years of relevant experience, or NQF 4 and 15 years of relevant experience.
• Familiarity with civil engineering test methods under THM1 and SANS.
• Physically able to handle, process and move samples.

Required skills

• Competence in all laboratory divisions (soils, asphalt, seals, concrete/aggregates), quality laboratory control and field work supervision.
• Knowledge of health and safety and familiarity with COTO.
• Computer literacy (Word, Excel, Outlook).
