Assistant Resident Engineer – Roads

About the role

We are seeking an Assistant Resident Engineer for the Mtentu Bridge project in Port Edward, Eastern Cape. The role supports contract administration, reviews construction drawings, and ensures quality control on road and bridge works.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with contract administration and manage contractor queries by liaising with designers.
• Inspect works and test results to maintain quality control.
• Prepare and update cost estimates to project completion.
• Maintain site administration records in SMEC’s quality management system.
• Attend technical and site meetings, taking minutes and preparing monthly progress reports.
• Liaise with clients and contractors, managing resources for site supervision.
• Monitor programme schedules, contract budgets, and handle claims and variation orders.
• Participate in stakeholder engagement and close out projects with completion reports.
• Monitor environmental management programs related to the project.

Required profile

• Minimum B.Sc or BTech in Civil Engineering (PR Eng advantageous).
• At least 4 years’ experience in road and construction projects.
• Extensive experience with major conditions of contract and contractual issue management; General Conditions of Contract 2015 advantageous.
• Fluent in spoken and written English.
