Artisan (Diesel Mechanic) – Bus Services Maintenance

About the role

To perform general maintenance on buses to ensure a reliable service for the Tshwane Bus Services Division. The role involves hands‑on work in the bus workshop, diagnosing faults and keeping the fleet operational.

Key responsibilities

• Remove, dismantle, repair and re‑mount components such as engines, gearboxes, steering boxes and differentials.
• Diagnose faults using job cards and conduct inspections and tests on repaired or modified buses.
• Perform small auto‑electrical repairs and carry out preventative and corrective maintenance.
• Attend to vehicle recoveries, breakdowns and towing as required.
• Maintain accurate repair and maintenance documentation and ensure compliance with occupational health and safety legislation.

Required profile

• Valid Diesel Mechanic trade certificate (red seal) and at least two years’ experience maintaining buses or heavy vehicles.
• Valid EC1(04), EC or C1(04) driving licence with a valid PrDP and ability to undergo criminal record and fingerprint checks.
• Willingness to work shifts, standby and overtime, and to perform physical work for continuous periods.

Required skills

• Diesel engine, gearbox and differential repair.
• Fault diagnosis and use of diagnostic job cards.
• Auto‑electrical repair on bus systems.
• Operation of bus workshop equipment and interpretation of technical drawings.
• Basic computer literacy, preferably Microsoft Office.
