Artisan Builder - Building & Civil Maintenance

About the role

Bidvest Facilities Management, a provider of integrated facilities management and engineering solutions in South Africa, is hiring a permanent, full-time Artisan Builder for its BFM Operations 1 team in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. The post covers building and civil maintenance, with a focus on structural repairs, wall construction, roof maintenance and fixture installation. The minimum requirement is 3 years of practical experience in building construction, masonry, carpentry or civil maintenance.

Key responsibilities

• Construct, repair and maintain building structures such as masonry brickwork, drywalls, roofs, ceilings, plasterwork and cabinetry using wood, metal, concrete and composite materials.
• Interpret architectural drawings, blueprints and job specifications, and carry out site measurements, structural assessments and material estimates.
• Maintain hand tools, power equipment and machinery in safe working condition.
• Guide apprentices, assistants and junior team members, and keep accurate records of work, hours and materials used.
• Enforce compliance with the OHS Act and local building regulations on all sites, and work with project managers and other artisans to complete maintenance requests on time.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years' experience as a builder or in a similar artisan role with proven structural craftsmanship.
• Sound knowledge of construction procedures, building materials, structural repair methods and site safety protocols.
• Ability to read and work from technical drawings, plans and layout diagrams.
• Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, communication and teamwork.
• Strongly preferred: N3 qualification and a recognised Trade Test certificate in Building, Carpentry, Bricklaying or Construction, plus multi-skilling in plumbing, basic electrical work, roofing or masonry.
