Analytical Chemistry Intern

About the role

SGS, a global inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is looking for an Analytical Chemistry Intern in Somerset West on a contract basis. The intern works in the laboratory, handling samples, running analyses and supporting the quality management system.

Key responsibilities

• Log received samples into the SLIMS using client work orders and print sample labels after sorting them correctly.
• Analyse all analytical samples using the correct procedures and methods, and report results within the specified timeframe.
• Operate laboratory instrumentation and record its repairs, maintenance, calibration and verification.
• Keep all analytical data and calculations traceable and stored in the relevant files or LIMS.
• Follow quality directives, ISO 17025 and the SGS QHSE management system, and help prepare for SANAS audits.
• Report technical and managerial problems, HSE hazards, incidents and near misses, and assist in investigations.
• Help with training, monthly stock counts and other reasonable tasks assigned by the line manager.

Required profile

• BTech or National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, or equivalent experience recognised through Recognition of Prior Learning.
• Grade 12 / Matric with Mathematics and Science.
• South African citizen with a valid ID, aged 18-30, currently unemployed, with no criminal record.
• Willing to relocate to Somerset West.

Required skills

• Exceptional computer literacy with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Interest in skills development and relevant legislation, ISO-17E learning, facilitation and strong research skills.
• High attention to detail, accuracy, organisation and self-motivation.
