Academic Head of Department – 5-year Contract

About the role

The University of the Free State’s Faculty of Education seeks an Academic Head of Department for the Department of Curriculum Studies and Higher Education. This is a five‑year contract position with the possibility of a second term, based on the Bloemfontein campus.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervise postgraduate research.
• Lead curriculum development and ensure alignment with current higher‑education standards.
• Plan and execute research strategies, fostering a vibrant research culture.
• Oversee departmental administration, budgeting, and allocation of funds.
• Provide academic leadership, shaping departmental vision and influencing faculty culture.
• Facilitate effective communication between staff, students, and university management.

Required profile

• Permanent academic staff status within the Faculty of Education.
• Relevant higher‑education qualifications (SAQA‑accredited if obtained abroad).
• Valid South African ID or passport for foreign nationals.
• Proven experience in teaching, research supervision, and curriculum development.
• Demonstrated ability to manage departmental finances and lead academic teams.
