Ward Clerk – Renal Unit

About the role

The Renal Unit is seeking a Ward Clerk to provide essential administrative support to the nursing team. Reporting to the Unit Manager, the clerk will ensure smooth inter‑departmental communication, accurate record‑keeping, and high‑quality client service.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct clerical and secretarial duties as delegated by the Unit Manager.
• Coordinate bed bookings and manage patient lists and bookings.
• Assist with staff planning and answer telephone enquiries.
• Manage surgical and ethical stock, including ordering, stock‑taking and employee orientation.
• Oversee timely billing processes for stock and services.
• Provide flexible ward deployment according to operational needs.
• Maintain high‑quality client service and ensure speedy execution of non‑nursing activities.
• Attend meetings and in‑service training as scheduled.
• Obtain authorisation for renal sessions and liaise with funders.
• Keep accurate records of renal sessions and generate required reports.
• Open new renal patient files, archive documents and follow emergency plans.
• Eliminate medico‑legal risks through correct documentation filing.

Required profile

• Grade 12 qualification.
• Experience or training in data capturing and stock control (beneficial).
• Strong computer literacy and proficiency in the full Microsoft Office suite (essential).
• Experience dealing with customers.
• Commitment to continuous improvement.
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
• Reliability, motivation and a strong work ethic.
• Professional integrity with confidentiality and discretion.
• Knowledge of medical terminology (advantageous).
• Familiarity with hospital procedures (advantageous).
• Secretarial experience or qualification (advantageous).
