U.S. Tax Preparer, Small Business Returns

About the role

BenchTax is creating an in‑house U.S. tax preparation and review function focused on quality, speed, and customer experience. We are looking for experienced U.S. tax professionals to prepare and review small‑business returns, ensuring accuracy and clear communication with clients.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare federal and applicable state returns for small‑business customers, including 1040, Schedule C, 1120, 1120‑S, and 1065.
• Review customer documents, bookkeeping records, year‑end financials, and prior‑year returns to identify missing or inconsistent information.
• Make straightforward, supported bookkeeping or tax adjustments and document or escalate issues that require correction before filing.
• Communicate directly with customers to request information, conduct draft review calls, and explain returns, balances, and next steps in plain language.
• Prepare or support returns involving R&D credits (Form 6765) and flag any missing documentation for specialist review.
• Provide concise status updates, respond promptly to messages, and proactively flag blockers or deadline risks.
• Document workpapers, assumptions, adjustments, and customer conversations clearly for reviewers and advisors.

Required profile

• Valid IRS PTIN is mandatory.
• CPA or Enrolled Agent designation is preferred.
• Experience with R&D credits and Form 6765 is strongly preferred.
• Ability to explain tax concepts clearly and empathetically to non‑tax professionals.
• Self‑starter who can resolve routine tax preparation questions independently and escalate only complex or advisory issues.

Required skills

• Proficiency with professional tax preparation software.
• Knowledge of R&D credit calculations and Form 6765.
• Understanding of U.S. small‑business tax forms (1040, Schedule C, 1120, 1120‑S, 1065).
