Traffic Signal Technician – Intelligent Transport Systems

About the role

The Traffic Signal Technician will ensure the optimum functionality of signalised intersections across Tshwane. Working within the Intelligent Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering section, the role supports safe and efficient road transport through maintenance, repair and construction of traffic signal infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct maintenance, repair and construction of traffic signals, including wiring, electronic controllers, fault finding, PLC programming, cable jointing and reticulation.
• Operate the cherry picker machine to access elevated signal components.
• Repair accident damage at intersections to restore signal operation.
• Organise, control and utilise material, personnel and machinery to deliver operational services efficiently.

Required profile

• Trade certificate as an Electrician (red seal).
• Minimum two years’ experience in traffic signal maintenance, repair or construction within an electrical environment.
• Physical fitness, a valid Code EC1 driving licence with PrDP, and willingness to work shifts and after‑hours as required.
• Computer literacy and ability to undergo competency assessments, criminal record checks and fingerprinting.

Required skills

• Good knowledge of Auto motor and Syntell controllers (electrical and mechanical).
• Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) for traffic signal systems.
• Ability to operate a cherry picker safely.
• Proficiency in wiring, cable jointing and fault finding for signal equipment.
