About the role
The Senior Fibre Technician will apply hands‑on expertise in optical fibre to support the delivery and maintenance of South Africa's radio‑astronomy telescopes, including the SKA‑1 Mid Dish fibre network. The role involves on‑site work at telescope locations and at the Cape Town office.
Key responsibilities
- Install and terminate optical fibre for Dish Fibre Network (DFN) at telescope sites and the Cape Town office.
- Perform regular inspections, troubleshooting, and maintenance of fibre optic systems.
- Document installations and capture as‑built data for each network.
- Conduct acceptance testing according to prescribed procedures.
- Manage and maintain existing fibre networks, ensuring high‑quality installations.
- Respond quickly to fibre link breakdowns to restore service.
Required profile
- Good working knowledge of hand and power tools used in fibre work.
- Proficiency in fibre cable termination with connectors.
- Experience with fusion splicing techniques.
- Ability to work at heights of 5‑10 metres safely.
- Strong quality awareness and responsibility.
