Researcher – Education Funding and Systems Efficiency

About the role

The Researcher – Education Funding and Systems Efficiency will lead and support research on the economics of public education and the efficiency of education policies. The role involves investigating policy interventions and their impact on learning environments and outcomes, working in a hybrid setting across Gauteng, Western Cape and Eastern Cape.

Key responsibilities

• Undertake primary and secondary research on education funding and systems efficiency.
• Produce policy briefs, discussion documents, legislative submissions and popular education materials, managing the research process from start to finish.
• Apply robust statistical analyses and participatory action research methodologies.
• Monitor local and international education news, research, policy and law reform relevant to the thematic area.
• Collaborate with other departments, members, the EELC and external stakeholders to ensure research is movement‑driven and context‑responsive.
• Advocate for research findings through media engagement, public platforms and strategic stakeholder relationships.

Required profile

• Postgraduate degree in Education, Economics or a related social science.
• 2–3 years of experience in policy research, public finance analysis or a comparable research‑intensive role.
• Proven research experience with strong writing and editing abilities.
• Knowledge of the South African education system, education policy and public finance is strongly advantageous.
• Commitment to social justice and equality in education.
