Occupational Health Practitioner (Retail)

About the role

The Occupational Health Practitioner will deliver comprehensive occupational and primary healthcare services across a retail network, ensuring employee wellbeing, operational continuity, and compliance with occupational health and safety legislation. Based in Pretoria, the role involves travelling to multiple stores in the region.

Key responsibilities

• Provide professional occupational and primary healthcare services to employees in offices and stores.
• Conduct medical assessments including pre‑employment, periodic, return‑to‑work, incapacity and exit exams.
• Implement and manage medical surveillance programmes based on risk exposure.
• Validate and manage employee sick leave in line with policy and legislation.
• Handle work‑related clinical matters such as disability management and fitness‑for‑work assessments.
• Facilitate executive medicals with external service providers.
• Implement employee wellness initiatives and health promotion programmes.
• Coordinate Employee Assistance Programs, referrals and follow‑ups.
• Provide preliminary counselling and arrange trauma counselling when required.
• Manage trauma, injuries and injury‑on‑duty cases, including assessments and referrals.

Required profile

• Degree or Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing or Occupational Health Practice.
• Advanced Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSAct) Certificate (NOSA).
• Active registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) or equivalent body.
• Minimum 3 years experience in occupational health nursing, preferably in a retail or high‑volume environment.
• Strong knowledge of the OHS Act, COIDA and relevant labour legislation.
• Experience in health surveillance, IOD case management and wellness programmes.
• Computer literacy with experience in medical reporting.
• Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel extensively across the region.
• Availability outside normal office hours for emergencies.
