Occupational Health Nurse – Risk‑Based Medical Surveillance

About the role

The Occupational Health Nurse will deliver a comprehensive occupational healthcare programme for clients, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation. This role involves medical surveillance, emergency response, and health promotion within the workplace.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and evaluate a risk‑based medical surveillance programme covering pre‑employment, baseline, annual, transfer and exit screenings.
• Manage occupational safety, health and waste activities.
• Administer, report and follow‑up Injury on Duty cases in line with employer policies.
• Provide after‑hours standby coverage and respond to medical emergencies within scope of practice.
• Support worker reintegration after prolonged absence and manage chronic disease to maintain productivity.
• Offer consultation, counselling and referrals for employees as needed.
• Advise line management on absenteeism, sick‑leave management and occupational health compliance.
• Investigate client queries, monitor hazard‑exposure trends and implement preventative measures.
• Participate in internal and external audits and maintain occupational health equipment.
• Handle administrative tasks including data capture, document management and confidentiality assurance.

Required profile

• National Senior Certificate.
• Degree or Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing.
• Certificates in Audiology, Spirometry and Vision screening.
• Valid Dispensing certificate.
• Valid driver’s licence and own insured vehicle.
• Willingness to join after‑hours standby rotation.
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and SASOHN.
• 3–5 years’ experience in Occupational Health Nursing.
• Good understanding of the Health & Safety Act and related legislation.
• Proficiency in Office 365.
