Mechanical Design Engineer – Truck Trailers

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in truck trailer and heavy‑vehicle design. You will be responsible for taking concepts through to manufacturing, ensuring high‑quality, compliant trailer solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop truck trailers and components using 3D CAD software.
• Prepare detailed manufacturing drawings, bills of materials and assembly documentation.
• Perform structural and mechanical design calculations.
• Support production teams during manufacturing and assembly.
• Conduct design reviews, fault finding and engineering improvements.
• Ensure compliance with South African road transport regulations and industry standards.
• Liaise with suppliers, production teams and project managers.
• Participate in prototype development, testing and validation.

Required profile

• BEng/BTech or National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
• 3–5 years’ experience in truck trailer or heavy‑vehicle design.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor or similar CAD tools.
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, welding and sheet‑metal fabrication.
• Experience with FEA analysis and structural design (advantageous).
• Knowledge of trailer regulations and automotive standards.
• Valid driver’s licence.
