Lead Specialist: Metadata and Reference Data

About the role

Absa is seeking a seasoned professional to lead metadata and reference data governance, strengthening the bank’s overall data governance framework. The role will ensure consistent, secure management of critical data assets across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and enhance the business data glossary, ensuring consistent terminology and clear definitions.
• Document and validate data lineage, mapping data flow from source systems to reports with a focus on Critical Data Elements.
• Coordinate reference data reviews, defining values, hierarchies, ownership and control mechanisms.
• Collaborate with Data Owners, Data Stewards, Product Owners and System Owners to confirm definitions, validate lineage and establish metadata requirements.
• Maintain accurate metadata records, identify gaps, track remediation actions and produce governance dashboards, reports and audit evidence.

Required profile

• 5‑8 years of experience in data governance, metadata management or reference data governance, preferably in a regulated financial services environment.
• Proven track record developing data glossaries, metadata repositories or data catalogues and documenting data lineage across multiple systems.
• Experience managing reference data code sets, hierarchies, ownership and change‑control processes.
• Relevant diploma or degree in Data Management, Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Analysis, Risk Management or related field; certifications in data governance or metadata management are a plus.
