AI Engineer (AWS / Generative AI)

About the role

An established AWS cloud services business is looking for an experienced AI Engineer to design, build and deploy practical AI, machine learning and Generative AI solutions for clients across different industries. The role is hands-on engineering with a strong client-facing element, from discovery through to deployment and ongoing improvement, and offers growth toward senior technical leadership or leading projects and engineers. It is remote, based in Cape Town.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, test and deploy AI, ML and Generative AI solutions using AWS technologies.
• Build GenAI applications with Amazon Bedrock, including prompt workflows, embeddings, retrieval-based solutions and AI agents.
• Develop and deploy machine learning pipelines with Amazon SageMaker.
• Write clean, maintainable Python code and build APIs to integrate AI into business applications.
• Develop and maintain infrastructure as code for reliable deployments.
• Take part in client discovery, evaluate options, costs and risks, and help turn requirements into project plans and estimates.
• Own projects from development through deployment, monitoring and optimisation, and share knowledge with the team.

Required profile

• 3+ years of hands-on experience in AI engineering, applied machine learning or software development with substantial practical AI exposure.
• At least one ML or GenAI solution taken from experimentation into production or near-production, with post-deployment support.
• Ability to explain technical solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders and to engage directly with clients.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT or a related field.

Required skills

• Strong Python; Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock (including retrieval-based solutions and agentic workflows).
• AWS Lambda, Terraform, Git, CI/CD pipelines and Linux.
• API development and integration for AI and ML applications.
• Advantageous: AWS certifications, vector databases, containerised deployments (ECS/EKS), Golang, and AWS AI services.
