Technical Specialist – Transmission & Distribution

About the role

The Technical Specialist will lead multidisciplinary teams delivering high‑voltage transmission and distribution substation projects (132 kV‑765 kV) for the Power and Energy division in Johannesburg. The role focuses on elevating technical performance, ensuring quality, and supporting client relationships.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical support and guidance to engineers, designers and draughtspersons.
• Lead multi‑disciplinary teams in the design and delivery of high‑voltage substation projects.
• Identify and solve complex engineering challenges.
• Develop and maintain client relationships and ensure adherence to technical standards and QA requirements.
• Plan, resource and monitor projects, preparing client reports and design documentation.
• Mentor and train staff, contributing to the discipline’s profitability.
• Supervise drawing production, specifications and contract documentation in line with SMEC procedures.
• Prepare expressions of interest and tender submissions.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Engineering degree or higher from an accredited institution.
• Minimum 10 years of practical experience in transmission and distribution substation design.
• Relevant professional memberships.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Proven project management and leadership abilities.

Required skills

• Engineering design software (commercial analytical tools).
• Quality Assurance (QA) processes and standards.
• Knowledge of engineering materials and their applications.
• Understanding of contractual matters related to construction.
• OHS and environmental regulation compliance.
