Surveillance Officer (Professional Nurse) – 12‑Month Contract

About the role

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is seeking a Professional Nurse to serve as a Surveillance Officer on a 12‑month contract. The role focuses on strengthening case surveillance for HIV and related conditions across public‑sector health facilities in KwaZulu‑Natal.

Key responsibilities

• Establish and maintain case surveillance networks from provincial to facility level.
• Facilitate the implementation of an integrated national case surveillance system.
• Ensure efficient data flow: collection, collation, analysis, interpretation and dissemination.
• Liaise with CDC directorate, environmental health, IPC teams and HIV programmes to improve reporting.
• Develop training materials and routinely train public‑sector health staff on case surveillance usage.
• Mentor and coach health‑care workers in system utilisation and performance tracking.
• Provide feedback platforms for health workers and act as liaison between local DoHs and NICD.
• Disseminate standard operating procedures and guidelines to all relevant users.

Required profile

• Registered Professional Nurse with experience in public‑health or communicable disease surveillance.
• Strong understanding of HIV surveillance regulations and case reporting.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
• Ability to develop training materials and deliver coaching sessions.
