Ship/Vessel Operator

About the role

The Ship/Vessel Operator will support all aspects of ship agency operations at the Port of Elizabeth, ensuring smooth vessel husbandry, cargo handling and client service. This role requires strong knowledge of bulk export operations and the ability to work under pressure in a dynamic port environment.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate vessel husbandry activities such as crew changes, stores delivery and cargo loading/unloading.
• Plan and monitor vessel operations in line with agency standards and client requirements.
• Prepare and submit reports, Bills of Lading and other documentation as required.
• Manage port disbursement, funding and cash‑flow processes.
• Liaise with customers, third‑party service providers and internal teams to maintain effective relationships.
• Oversee appointments, performance, invoicing and payment of sub‑contractors.

Required profile

• Minimum Matric (Grade 12) education.
• At least 3 years of operational experience in vessel handling or related shipping activities.
• Strong English literacy and numeracy.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
• Customer‑service oriented and able to work weekends or additional hours when needed.
• Valid Code 08 driver’s licence.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Office.
• Experience using IPMS (Integrated Port Management System).
