Shift Supervisor – Underground Mining

About the role

The Shift Supervisor will oversee a section of underground mining operations, ensuring all activities comply with the Mine Health and Safety Act and company safety standards. This role involves planning production targets, coordinating drilling and blasting, and managing personnel and equipment on site.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure all work procedures follow safety standards and regulations.
• Plan and monitor production targets and implement measures to achieve them.
• Coordinate drilling and blasting operations, including charging shot holes, installing initiating systems, and timing blasts.
• Handle, store, and issue explosives and accessories, and safely destroy old explosives.
• Install and remove ventilation pipes, columns, and other underground infrastructure.
• Remove obstructions from ore passes using blasting techniques.
• Transport personnel, material, and equipment using a light delivery vehicle (LDV) within the mine.

Required profile

• Grade 12 or NQF Level 4 equivalent.
• Blasting Certificate and Shift Supervisor Certificate.
• 1‑3 years of experience as a miner.
• Knowledge of basic health and safety principles, Falls of Ground, Platinum Safety Rules, and the Mine Health and Safety Act.
• Understanding of rock breaking legislation, rock strata conditions, and support principles in hard‑rock environments.

Required skills

• Blasting operations and explosives handling.
• Use of initiating systems and shock‑tube blasting circuits.
• Operation of light delivery vehicles (LDV) underground.
• Installation and removal of ventilation infrastructure.
