Senior Wetland Ecologist

About the role

WSP is seeking a Senior Wetland Ecologist to join its Biodiversity team within the Earth and Environment business unit. Based in Johannesburg, the role offers the chance to work on technically challenging projects across South Africa and sub‑Saharan Africa, supporting both local permitting processes and international lender requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Scope and cost biodiversity aspects of complex domestic and international EIA projects.
• Conduct wetland species and ecosystem studies to assess site‑level impacts and identify mitigation measures.
• Develop wetland offset strategies for Water Use License applications.
• Perform Critical Habitat and Ecosystem Services assessments to meet IFC Performance Standard 6.
• Prepare baseline reports, impact and risk assessments, management plans, and offset strategies for environmental authorisations and lender due diligence.
• Oversee project delivery, including invoicing, subcontractor coordination, and client relationship management.
• Maintain strong internal and external client relationships throughout project delivery.

Required profile

• Established consulting professional with a strong technical background in ecology.
• Proven track record as an ecologist with consulting experience.
• Excellent project management capabilities and ability to deliver on time and within budget.
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain client relationships.
• Willingness to work both from the office and on‑site as required.
