Research Theme Leader – Planetary Health & Well-Being (Assoc Prof/Prof)

About the role

The University of the Free State is seeking a senior academic leader to head its Planetary Health and Well‑Being research theme. The role combines strategic vision, interdisciplinary research coordination and capacity building across health sciences, natural and agricultural sciences, and humanities.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement a forward‑looking research vision that positions UFS as a centre of excellence in planetary and One Health.
• Lead cross‑faculty research programmes addressing climate change, food systems, zoonoses and ecosystem degradation.
• Secure competitive funding from national and international agencies and manage multi‑stakeholder partnerships.
• Translate research outcomes into policy recommendations, industry solutions and community resilience strategies.
• Supervise postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, fostering inclusive and interdisciplinary mentorship.
• Collaborate with other Research Theme Leaders and the Directorate of Research Development to integrate the theme within the university’s strategic framework.

Required profile

• Established researcher with a strong publication record in planetary health, One Health or related transdisciplinary fields.
• Demonstrated experience in leading large‑scale, interdisciplinary research projects and securing external funding.
• Proven ability to mentor graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
• Experience in building partnerships with government, industry, NGOs and international organisations.
