About the role
The Marine Biogeochemistry Lab in the Department of Oceanography at the University of Cape Town invites applications for a full‑time, five‑year Junior Research Fellow position focused on marine isotope biogeochemistry.
Key responsibilities
- Design and conduct at‑sea experiments to quantify biogeochemical rates under low‑oxygen and low‑nutrient conditions.
- Analyse laboratory samples, including nitrogen and oxygen isotope ratios of dissolved and particulate nitrogen species.
- Develop an independent, complementary research stream (e.g., omics techniques) that enhances the lab’s capabilities.
- Supervise students embedded in collaborative projects and contribute to undergraduate and Honours teaching in Oceanography.
- Participate in international project meetings, conferences, and large collaborative research initiatives.
Required profile
- Experience in analytical marine biogeochemistry and isotope geochemistry.
- Ability to design and execute interdisciplinary research projects related to nitrogen cycling.
Required skills
- High‑sensitivity measurement of nitrogen and oxygen isotopes.
- Laboratory analysis of dissolved and particulate nitrogen species.
