Human Resources Manager

About the role

Mutherboard is seeking its first dedicated HR Manager to build the people function from the ground up across its UK and South African operations. You will own the full employee lifecycle, from recruitment to engagement, development, and performance management, in a fast‑moving, remote‑first startup environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead end‑to‑end recruitment for South Africa and the UK, including sourcing, interviewing, and extending offers.
• Design and deliver a seamless onboarding experience that accelerates new‑hire productivity.
• Manage probation reviews, regular check‑ins, and off‑boarding processes.
• Develop and maintain HR policies, employee handbooks, and contracts for both jurisdictions.
• Ensure compliance with South African (LRA, BCEA, EEA) and UK employment law.
• Oversee employee records, leave management, ER issues, grievances, and disciplinary actions.
• Implement a performance review cycle, coach managers, and handle under‑performance with clear PIPs.
• Create career frameworks, competency ladders, and champion internal mobility.
• Drive employee engagement, run surveys, plan rituals/off‑sites, and act as cultural glue across time zones.
• Support compensation & benefits reviews, workforce planning, and people analytics.

Required profile

• 5+ years of HR experience, including at least 2 years in a generalist or HR manager role.
• Based in South Africa with the ability to operate across SA and the UK (or quickly learn UK employment law).
• Strong knowledge of South African employment legislation and good exposure to UK employment law.
• Comfortable working in a startup environment with ambiguity and building processes from scratch.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency with monday.com for HR workflows.
• Experience using Slack for team communication.
• Familiarity with Google Workspace for documentation and collaboration.
• Comfort with AI tools to enhance recruitment and HR processes.
