Volunteer Attorney (Remote, South Africa)

About the role

RISE Against Domestic Violence SA is seeking a qualified attorney to provide remote, volunteer legal support to survivors of domestic violence across South Africa. This role is entirely online, flexible, and focused on delivering trauma‑informed, survivor‑first legal guidance.

Key responsibilities

• Review survivor queries and offer clear, practical advice on protection orders, harassment, divorce and related matters.
• Assist with drafting documents, statements and affidavits where appropriate.
• Conduct legal research to stay current on South African statutes and case law relevant to domestic violence.
• Collaborate with counsellors and other volunteers to ensure a coordinated, trauma‑informed response.
• Participate in scheduled online support sessions and document guidance according to organisational protocols.

Required profile

• Admission as an Attorney or Advocate in South Africa, or an LLB with relevant practical experience (including volunteer candidate attorneys or recent graduates).
• Strong grounding in South African law, especially in areas intersecting with domestic violence, family law, labour and human rights.
• Commitment to gender‑neutral, non‑discriminatory, survivor‑centred practice and confidentiality.
• Ability to work independently in a remote volunteer environment and manage time effectively.

Required skills

• Legal research and interpretation of South African statutes and case law.
• Clear written communication for online support.
• Negotiation skills for guiding survivors in interactions with opposing parties and institutions.
