Unit Manager – Operating Theatre

About the role

The successful candidate will provide strong clinical leadership, ensure excellence in patient care, and manage the operational efficiency of the theatre complex in line with hospital standards, infection prevention protocols, and quality improvement initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure delivery of safe, comprehensive, and quality nursing care within the operating room environment.
• Maintain and improve clinical standards, policies, and procedures in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements.
• Monitor patient safety initiatives, infection prevention and control practices, and clinical risks.
• Manage surgical lists, theatre utilisation, patient flow and multidisciplinary team collaboration.
• Oversee staffing requirements, resource allocation, and operational efficiency of the operating room.
• Drive compliance with accreditation standards, SANC regulations, and hospital protocols.
• Participate in audits, incident investigations, and performance improvement programmes.
• Facilitate staff training, mentoring, and continuous professional development.
• Manage stock utilisation and ensure equipment is operational and staff are trained on its use.

Required profile

• Diploma/Degree in General Nursing and Midwifery, registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse.
• Postgraduate qualification in Operating Theatre Nursing Science (essential).
• Minimum 3‑5 years’ experience in an operating room environment, with supervisory or management experience preferred.
• Ability to function effectively under pressure in a fast‑paced environment.
• Valid South African driver’s licence and reliable transport.

Required skills

• Computer literacy.
• Proficiency with hospital information systems.
