Unit Manager – Medical/Surgical Ward

About the role

The Unit Manager will lead the Medical/Surgical Ward at Netcare Kroon Hospital, ensuring the delivery of safe, high‑quality nursing care. This role coordinates multidisciplinary teams, drives quality improvement, and supports staff development within a patient‑centred environment.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and monitor nursing care to meet professional and ethical standards.
• Manage financial aspects of the ward, including cost‑effective staffing, billing, stock control and purchasing.
• Identify and implement quality‑improvement initiatives, measuring outcomes and reporting results.
• Investigate incidents, capture data in the Incident Management System (IMS) and ensure compliance with safety legislation.
• Maintain equipment, asset registers and ensure all assets are functional.
• Evaluate patient journeys, nursing quality indicators and clinical outcomes to enhance patient experience.
• Promote infection prevention, standard precautions and overall health and wellbeing of patients and staff.
• Lead transformation targets set by the Transformation Committee and foster teamwork.
• Support continuous professional development of staff through mentoring, training and up‑to‑date policy knowledge.

Required profile

• Proven experience in nursing management within a hospital setting.
• Strong understanding of clinical governance, quality improvement and risk management.
• Ability to manage budgets, staffing acuities and resource allocation effectively.
• Excellent communication skills for interaction with patients, multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
• Commitment to personal and professional development and staying current with healthcare policies and research.
