Unit Manager - Maternity & NICU

About the role

The Unit Manager for the Maternity and NICU will lead a multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, high‑quality nursing care. This senior nursing professional will be responsible for capacity building, mentoring, and ensuring compliance with clinical governance and infection‑prevention standards.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure safe, cost‑effective patient care aligned with the hospital’s clinical governance strategy and evidence‑based practice.
• Evaluate the patient journey through experience feedback and stakeholder input.
• Monitor nursing quality indicators and clinical outcomes, reporting on performance.
• Communicate clearly with patients and families regarding care plans.
• Promote health and wellbeing for patients and staff.
• Enforce infection‑prevention protocols and international standard precautions.
• Implement group quality improvement initiatives.
• Liaise with public liability regarding incidents that pose risk to the business.

Required profile

• A relevant nursing qualification (B Cur Degree or equivalent) or a related management qualification.
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse.
• 3‑5 years of experience as a Unit Manager in a maternity or NICU setting.
• Compliance with SANC code and applicable health‑care legislation.
• Compulsory Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and midwifery qualification.
• Advanced computer literacy.
