Special Risks Designer

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Special Risks Designer to join our dynamic team in Johannesburg. The role focuses on fire protection design for special risk systems, delivering high‑quality, compliant drawings and calculations across a variety of projects.

Key responsibilities

• Create Issued‑for‑Construction drawings and perform redesigns as needed.
• Draft fire design drawings and piping layouts.
• Develop As‑Built (red‑line) drawings and issue working drawings.
• Perform hydraulic calculations and prepare cutting lists, layouts, and bills of materials.
• Coordinate with structural, electrical, and mechanical design teams.
• Design fire sprinkler and suppression systems in line with NFPA and ASIB standards.
• Conduct material, dimensional, and weight limitation calculations.
• Communicate with engineers, site managers, and installation teams to resolve design issues.
• Review and redraft technical drawings with stakeholders to ensure compliance with engineering and manufacturing regulations.
• Conduct site visits when required.

Required profile

• Proven experience in fire protection and special risk system design.
• Knowledge of NFPA and ASIB standards; ASIB certification is advantageous.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Distinction in Mathematics and experience in sales, estimating, or tender preparation are beneficial.
• Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams and communicate effectively with project stakeholders.
