Solar Installation Technician

About the role

Metsolar is seeking a hands‑on Solar Installation Technician to join its growing team in Johannesburg. You will work on commercial and industrial solar PV and battery storage projects, handling installation, commissioning, quality control and troubleshooting on‑site.

Key responsibilities

• Install and commission commercial/industrial solar PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
• Perform PV module mounting, DC and AC cabling, inverter installation and related electrical work.
• Configure and commission inverters, energy meters, monitoring equipment and EMS communication interfaces.
• Conduct site assessments, pre‑installation inspections and detailed technical due‑diligence.
• Inspect completed installations against designs, standards and manufacturer requirements; produce snag lists and quality‑control reports.
• Prepare installations for inspection and Certificate of Compliance (COC) sign‑off.
• Fault‑find and troubleshoot PV modules, inverters, batteries, electrical and communication systems.
• Read and interpret electrical drawings, single‑line diagrams, wiring diagrams and equipment manuals.
• Develop and maintain SOPs for operation, commissioning, maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Assist with planning, scheduling, contractor coordination and ensure safe, on‑time project delivery.

Required profile

• Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
• Recognised electrical qualification (e.g., Trade Test or equivalent).
• PV installer training/certification (e.g., PV GreenCard, SAPVIA short course) – advantageous or willingness to obtain.
• Valid driver’s licence (Code B) – advantageous.
• Minimum 3 years hands‑on experience in solar PV installation and commissioning, preferably in the commercial/industrial sector.
