Senior Veterinary Nurse (Radiology)

About the role

The University of Pretoria’s Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital is looking for a Senior Veterinary Nurse specialised in radiology to deliver diagnostic imaging services for small, large, exotic animals and wildlife.

Key responsibilities

• Take radiographs on all species and assist with specialised imaging procedures such as CT, MRI, scintigraphy, contrast studies and ultrasound.
• Administer and monitor sedation and assist with anaesthesia monitoring during imaging procedures.
• Maintain clinic hygiene, biosecurity and safety standards.
• Manage clinic administration including record keeping, stock control, referrals and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) operations.
• Liaise with service providers for maintenance and repair of radiology equipment.
• Provide continuous practical training for veterinary and nursing students and supervise new staff.
• Participate in after‑hours emergency call‑outs on a rotational basis and perform relief duties in other hospital sections.

Required profile

• Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (DipCurAnim, Dip Vet Nursing) or BVetNurse or equivalent.
• Registration as a veterinary nurse with the South African Veterinary Council.
• Minimum two years’ experience in veterinary nursing.

Required skills

• Radiography and advanced imaging techniques (CT, MRI, scintigraphy, ultrasound).
• Operation of Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) for image storage and retrieval.
• Sedation administration and anaesthesia monitoring.
• Implementation of biosecurity and clinic hygiene protocols.
• Liaison with equipment service providers for maintenance.
