Senior System Engineer – Virtualization (Remote, South Africa)

About the role

This senior infrastructure engineering position focuses on designing, operating, and continuously improving enterprise‑grade virtualization environments across VMware and Microsoft Hyper‑V platforms. The role is fully remote within South Africa and supports large‑scale, globally distributed systems used by millions of users.

Key responsibilities

• Design, deploy, administer, and optimize VMware ESXi, vCenter and Microsoft Hyper‑V environments.
• Manage Hyper‑Converged Infrastructure (vSAN) and traditional SAN‑based storage architectures.
• Oversee lifecycle activities such as upgrades, patching, migrations and hybrid/cloud integration.
• Monitor system performance, conduct capacity planning and apply reliability engineering practices.
• Collaborate with SRE, DevOps, networking and support teams to resolve production incidents and perform root‑cause analysis.
• Implement and maintain storage, backup and disaster‑recovery solutions.
• Develop automation scripts and tools to reduce manual effort.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation and improve operational procedures.

Required profile

• Strong hands‑on expertise with VMware virtualization technologies (ESXi, vCenter) in enterprise‑scale environments.
• Proven experience deploying and managing VMware vSAN.
• Solid experience with Microsoft Hyper‑V and System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM).
• Deep understanding of virtual networking concepts (vSwitches, Distributed Switches, VLANs, NIC teaming).
• Practical experience with SAN storage technologies (iSCSI, Fibre Channel, FCoE).
• Proficiency in automation and scripting using PowerShell, PowerCLI, Python or Bash.
