Senior Manager – Actuarial Research & Development

About the role

The Senior Manager – Actuarial Research & Development will report directly to the Chief Research Officer and lead the actuarial function within the R&D division of GEMS. Based at the Head Office in Pretoria, the role focuses on developing actuarial models, assessing healthcare utilisation and costs, and shaping sustainable benefit designs.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee and strengthen the actuarial function in Research and Development.
• Lead actuarial and health‑financing research activities, including forecasting and predictive scenario modelling.
• Develop actuarial models to assess utilisation, expenditure, risk and long‑term sustainability.
• Design new products and benefits, conduct impact and affordability assessments.
• Collaborate with clinical, policy and economics experts on cost‑mitigation strategies.
• Partner with data‑analytics, ICT teams and external actuarial partners to enhance analytical systems.
• Maintain relationships with academic and consulting partners.

Required profile

• B.Sc. (or equivalent) in Actuarial Science.
• Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (FASSA) with a practising certificate in healthcare.
• Minimum 8 years actuarial experience, including at least 3 years in healthcare.
• At least 5 years of senior leadership and influencing experience.
• Strong stakeholder, risk‑management and change‑management capabilities.
